For many years the best replacement for lost teeth had always been a set of dentures or false teeth. While dentures have been satisfactory in meeting both functional and cosmetic needs of patients, they aren’t always perfect. As an alternative option for patients looking for a more permanent solution, we can perform a procedure called dental implantation or tooth implants. Find out more about what tooth implants are and how they are performed.

Tooth implants explained

A tooth implant is essentially an artificial root used to support tooth/teeth restorations. They are used in order to counter the effects of tooth loss and to replicate the natural appearance and function of the teeth. A tooth implant consists of a small post made of metal (typically titanium) that serves as the missing tooth’s root structure. This post is placed into the jaw bone in order to hold a crown or a bridge.

SimplyTeeth patients looking for a more durable option to dentures and bridges may want teeth implants performed since these are permanent. They may also be used with other types of restorative dental procedures for stronger support.

How is dental implantation performed?

At our clinics, a pre-operative evaluation of the patient’s health and dental history is performed prior to the operation. Careful evaluation and planning is important to ensure that the procedure is a perfect fit for the patient’s unique oral and dental structures. Typically, a 2D radiograph of the area where the implants will be performed are taken to serve as a guide for correct placement and positioning.

Our dentists typically perform a dental implantation as an outpatient procedure using anesthesia administered by certified and highly trained professionals. In order to put a tooth implant in place, the pilot hole will be drilled into the bone and the implant screw is positioned. The surrounding bone will then be allowed to grow around the tooth implant to keep it secure. The implant is then allowed to heal and a crown is attached onto  the tooth implant temporarily. Once the gum has grown around it, a permanent crown is used as a replacement.

Are tooth implants effective?

As long as they are performed with skill and proper training, dental implantations have a high success rate. Of the many options for restoring missing teeth, only implants have proven durable and effective functionally. In many of our patients, implants may even be the only option available in order to fully restore the functions of the teeth.

Implants have a lot of advantages. They look very natural and are often difficult to distinguish from real teeth. They don’t only improve the patient’s looks and provide a boost of self-confidence, they also help improve oral functionality, significantly improving how the patient speaks or eats.

Are you a good candidate for Tooth implants?

We always perform a complete evaluation of our patients who opt for implants. This is to determine whether or not they qualify for the procedure. Certain factors, such as the patient’s bone density, health condition and lifestyle are considered in order to ensure that they are good candidates for the procedure.
